Re: Starting and Running Your Own Martial Arts School

Your Own Personal Image The Image you Project The question is "Are you a mentor, professor, drill sergeant?..." And then, what would that image look like to your students, and do you project that image, or is it only in your mind. You may need to make goals to project the image to others t...

Re: How to Make Tai Chi Classes more Fun?

I would also like to make it more fun. Most of our new students drop out within 3 months, and we don't understand why. Of course it is challenging, but I feel if it were more fun, that would make it worthwhile for them. At the end of each quarter, we have a little intro to push hands, which most fin...

Re: push hand forms

We don't have a push hands "form". We practice a variety of circles and applications, but then it's free form.

There is a two-person "form" but it's not part of Yang Family tai chi chuan.

Re: Major Knee Problems. Help Needed

I think this is where a teacher is most helpful. They can tell you what you are doing wrong by looking. Be most careful to not twist your knee when you bend it. It should bend in the same direction as your foot points. When you are in a bow stance, you should have the feeling of your feet flat on th...

Re: Looking for a place to start.

My opinion is that it is much harder to learn from a video than a person. But, we know someone who learned the hand form and sword form from the dvd's, so it's possible. You already know 24 of the 36 different hand form movements. If you have a pretty good foundation already, you could learn the res...

Re: Starting and Running Your Own Martial Arts School

Your School's Image What's a good image for a tai chi school? I was teaching some older ladies, and when I was showing the application of one of the tai chi movements, one of them walked away from the group. She said she didn't think knowing that was necessary for learning the form, and I disagreed....

Starting and Running Your Own Martial Arts School

I bought a book "Starting and Running your Own Martial Arts School" by Karen Levitz Vactor and Susan Lynn Peterson, Ph.D. which I thought we could use to have some discussions about how to be more successful. I thought I would periodically type the table of contents entry for a chapter and...

For Yang Family tai chi chuan, in Knee Brush, the back is straight but inclined forward, in line with the back leg.

意境 yi jing translation

For the current Association journal, we needed a translation for yi jing 意境 , which Master Yang says is a common Chinese expression. It has already gone to press, but we're still interested in a good translation. An explanation was the feeling you get looking at a photo/painting where you are drawn ...
