VR,

That is the history of any art. Some teachers leave stuff out based on forgetfulness, habit of doing the form or using their degree of development, just do not feel it may be important.

All forms are like that and taiji dao or jian is no diferent.

There is no moral code per se. The problem is those who have none (were nevr taught by thier 'parents') and may find it odd that someone else may institute said code and have them follow it. The code is the same in life as in taijiquan! The code is usually unwritten but many people seem to have igno...

Wu Tu Nan is best remembered as a one who tried to put some semblance of reality in taijiquan practice while getting rid (attempting to) with 'superstitious' version of practice and understanding. On the other hands, some still reference him with 'political overtones' and base their judgemnet of him...

Great pics of Ma!
Interestingly enough, his Wu style fast form starts similarily like the first few postures of the Beijing 48 shi taijiquan!

Brush knee is only hindered by the fitness and skill of the practitioner. The 'older' brush knee of my teacher (Hou Chi Kwang)I incorporated into Yang was a raised left knee/brush as if raising and pushing (may be pulling also) extended foot of attacker and right hand to upper body of attacker. It m...

tccstudent, If there is concurrence with Tian and other student(s) who play the same form he does in a similar vein, only then would I agree that this was an Old Yang attribute. If he was the only one with that form expression then that is more Tian's understanding based on his size and other variab...

amigo, There are no longer 'Original' Forms of Yang style taijiquan. Implying Luchan's form is/would be played the exact same way by every generation is a minsomer. If you do visual check of almost all the forms, they all approximate Chengfu's external postures. Naturally one body frame wil influenc...

The Wu family were scholars and as such the language of the classics MAY have had to be translated to the jargon of the day along with the social class of the Yang family, with provincial dialect changes and structure. i.e tone and homonyms.

Much of what we know about Yang style commentary or explanations appears to come from the Wu family. After the breakup with Yang? (so sayeth the oracle) and the end of Qing, Yang was stated to have compiled what the Wus' made clear and adopted to the changing climate. Wu family were provincial gover...

There is a part of that type of history that allows for fabrication of lineage due to secret stuff to make the art appear 'better' rather than skill and adaptability. Whatever is going on is left to the buyer! Yang stated he studied with Chen and Chen chronicles notes the same. Anything other than t...

gould25,

Push hands is not fighting. It is a training guide only. There is no such animal as tai chi fighting, etc. You must train sanshou (general term) utilizing shuaijiao and qi'na or combination thereof.

Louis, I have found the understanding of taiji concepts tend to be different based on the social and educational context. The 'scholar' as in Lutang is more conservative though still noting hard work and 'uprightness' all strengthen 'qi'. The unschooled tend to tow the line since they have no refere...

Audi, Excellent point. Most of wjhat I know of Chanssujin also comes from Chen style. It seems that most Yang style rarely mentions it and when I see Yang stylists do taijiquan, no evidence of any silk reeling is apparent in execution! therfore no qi'na or shuaijiao application. After qishi (hands r...

It seems alot of people talk about tuishou but never the application (martial output). Why is this so? Tuishou is a training tool and it seems few go above that level. Am I wrong here while saying even at competitive events, despite the exposition of push hands, it still ends up as a shoving/pushing...
