Re: How to Relax in Tai Chi?

A limited analogy that I sometimes use is that of a good golf swing. To execute a good and powerful drive, you have to be "song" from the start of the swing to its end. If any tension creeps in, be it the fingers, hands, legs, core, neck, etc. the swing will not be optimum and you will lo...

Re: EGAD! The fools want to put me on cadre - NOW WHAT?!

I have ended up acting as the information guide for our group and the area that concerns me most is my lack of experience with Tai Chi. As you put it in your post “the trainer must not train above his or her level of competence” and without the guidance of a skilled and experienced Yang Family Tai ...

Re: Solo Push Hands?

Lim : 1, Imagination leads the mind, the mind leads the chi, the chi leads the li [Taiji complementary li]. 2,The pure yi does one task at a time. But it has an unimaginable speed, the physical body can't trust such speed and won’t be able to keep up. It could create a Los Angles size dan-tien traf...

Re: Solo Push Hands?

Hi, Mr. Lim Sorry, it was my bad. The monkey mind was mistakenly thought you were living in Monterey Park which is 30 mins away from my residence. It was because of one word missing which have had brought me 320 + miles away. Let's leave the invitation open until you are coming to Los Angeles or I a...

Re: How to Relax in Tai Chi?

Hi everyone, except the TJQ practitioners :D Relaxation is only a relative description in describing the muscle strength which was not in use. Does anyone know that if one only use half of the muscle strength; and the other half is in the relaxed state? In other words, if you did not strike with a f...

Re: Faith in the effectiveness of Tai Chi

Hi, all There are many way to test the effectiveness of Tai Chi beside putting a TJQ practitioner in fighting ring. I had used arm wresting to test my effectiveness; such as tingjin, level of relaxation, breathing, and endurance. BTW I am convinced that to win the endurance test is not by how much m...

Re: How to Relax in Tai Chi?

......my attempt at breakdowning down my understanding so far, and I thought 'How to Relax' is one of the crucial steps in Tai Chi :) Trying not to go too off topic here, but I wanted to share one interesting article I've recently stumbled across: https://kottke.org/18/11/the-remarkable ... meditat...

Re: Solo Push Hands?

From time to time, someone asks whether it is possible to learn or practice push hands without a partner or a teacher. My own feeling is that this is not really possible ; however, once you have a certain foundation, doing solo form or other exercises can indeed improve your push hands . Hi, all Th...

Re: Solo Push Hands?

Hi, toportime The video you are seeing, here, is the application of tuishou demonstrated by a master and his student. Both had spent lots of time in practice to get to that level. Since you are not at that stage of the higher level, I think what you are looking for is the information how to get to t...

Re: Solo Push Hands?

The key to tuishou (推手) is one who has to understand the meaning of 柔中帶剛 . The practitioner must be able perform this special feature within the practice. BTW It was developed from the continuous practice of the slow basic forms to precondition the body, in order, to perform tuishou. If one can real...

Re: Sabre Stab Positioning

I think the design of the Indian and Chinese sabres are differently constructed, especially the blade and the handles. It seems that they do not strike or stab in the same manner.

Re: Solo Push Hands?

Please disregard what you were taught or observed from some competitions. The principle in training is different from what you saw out there. I don't know who taught or told you about the 8 energies. The 8 energies are executed by different parts of the body. They are methods rather than energies. I...

Re: Solo Push Hands?

With the understanding that my personal experience with pushands has been minimal, I keep seeing this thread talking about person A pushing and person B "pulling" and this seems to be odd to me. From the Ranking Study Material found on the main page pushands can be described as Sticking, ...
