CheeFatt, I find the reality of yiquan to be excellent when compared to push hands since alot of tai chi people do not do push hands, and if they do, they believe in soft overcoming hard (literally as opposed to metaphor or allegory). It is good to push with everyone to feel the quality and variabil...

rakyat, Yang style has been modified many times and will continue to be modified. You have Yang style according to Manqing, Dong, Fu, Li, Beijing and the list is endless. Fo according to your age, degree of flexibility, and so on. Success is not about form itself but what you have internalized about...

Audi, I do not recall the names but 'oldyangstyle's' information seems pertinent. Chen did borrow the names from Shaolin Buddhist arts at the time and incorporated them into his vision of what we know today as Chen shi taijiquan. Again, I do not recall the name of the person who did the comparison b...

It is said that there is a Shaolin form that was used as a template for Chen style and it has most of its names today hence thought some people say Chen style is Daoist, its Buddhist naming convention sure tells alot.

The Wu style was founded by Quan Yu, the Manchu. As the family became more 'sinicized', the surname became Wu (Jianquan=son) or Shanghai Wu vs the Quan Yu initial variant known as Northern Wu. The styles are not that much different though there are unique variation based on Peisheng Northern Wu vers...

From what I have seen in posture definition, it seems to have been xiaojia. as i look at the frame and posture, it appears to match present day Yang style.

Yang style could have developed independently and matched what is known as xiaojin due to Chengfu's large frame.

rakyat, That scenario has never been realistic of the 'instant touch syndrome' that immediately stops an attack. The mechanics of taijiquan are contained in shuaijiao and qi'na. Since we talk about ethics so often, the skilled ethical person never attacks without provocation. Wude!! Try Dr Yang's bo...

rakyat,

Better to do the whole form.
Since the movements done once are under 40 postures, try for that pattern of movement follwowing the format of the long form!

You can only do this if you have been practicing over 5 years or so and you know the form by heart. Otherwise the long form is better.

This "multistyle" stuff is interesting since one usually teaches according to the specific variant, be it Yang, Wu (2) or any taijiquan. The chanssujin principles should be in all styles/variations. If I see a style with "hands only" movement without torso/kua/hip involvement the...

Bill,

The best way is to learn any formal staff form and integrate with your Yang style experience. This is the better way in lieu of finding someone who actually does Chengfu's application. One can see integration in this way!

Previous training is the key, not qi. qi is deceptive because it gives people erroneous cues on how to proper handle themselves. Motion in stillness is still meaningless if no action behind it. It looks good and sounds other worldly and people become satisfied. Awareness may be better since it tells...

rakyat,

Tuishou concepts are always good to learn and incorporate but sadly the martial part of shuaijiao and qi'na are lacking.

Therefore tuishou is useless in the present scenario. One may use it (if one can) in concept to apply na, shuai, etc.
