GRC, I honestly didn't realise the can of worms I was opening up here. Not in a bad sense, but in the sense that this issue is apparently not clear. You make some very good points about internal energies being the most important. As I have mentioned, I am going to make it a point to research this is...

Jerry, I know you disagree with that position. I have read, many times, the "empty and full" treatise that you gave us a link to. A very good article, it does make sense. I don't 100% agree with it, but I can see it's point. I won't rehash that argument, I think both sides are correct on t...

Audi, Always a pleasure to hear from you. Good post. You make a great deal of sense. All things considered if one is good, two is better. I firmly believe that myself. When it comes to fighting I honestly prefer to have both of my feet firmly planted on the ground. I have trained to be nearly as eff...

David J, I have to disagree with some of what you say. I feel absolutely no less stable when I lift the toes of my front foot. I feel no wobbling and my partner cannot push me out from any angle like this. Same for toe down. My practical, real life, experiments do not bear out the in-stability facto...

Kal, Glad I could help. I don't know if it's a "rule" to keep your toe up in Wu style push hands, but it's the only way I've ever seen it done. Master Ma in his Tui Shou book shows it this way, so I guess it's a "standard" if nothing else. We have been hanging around the fringes ...

GRC, I am aware I have answers to the question of why the Wu style does this, for all the reasons you have mentioned and many, many more, and I'm beginning to slowly list them in the hopes of drawing out the answers I'm seeking. I have been studying Wu style for going on nineteen years, I know a goo...

Rx, The shift back of weight, or not, or only some, is a slippery slope discussion that we've had on here before, many times. To see these talks you can go to the top of any of the forum front pages and choose "show all" from the drop down menu instead of "show topics from last twenty...

Racerxx, Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you with us. What style do you practice? Just curious. Just to let you know, in the Wu style segmented square form of Wu Kwong Yu there is no "shifting back weight" before stepping to adjust the toes in the Brush Knee series. Or anywhere else for...

Kal, Hmmm......... I am still assimilating your post and will need to try some of what you say before I could make any kind of intelligent reply. I will only take exception to one of your statements at this time, then later on either today or tommorow after I have time to play with your suggestions ...

Nancy, You had me a bit flipped there for a while! But I found you. I was wondering where the group went, but then Yahoo must have updated the link from "my groups" because it started taking me to you again. Whew!!! For those who don't know, the group was renamed to Yang Family Tai Chi. [T...

Psal, I find it intersting that you have begun to do this, all on your own. It seems there must be some good reason for it, beyond the one I have given I feel sure, if the Wu's and some Yang transmissions teach it this way and you have begun to do this without any training along those lines. I would...

Toes, do you lift them?

There is a question I've been meaning to ask everyone here for a while, so why not now. When I do my forms I sometimes bring over a habit I learned from the Wu forms, that is I lift my toe of my non-wieghted foot off the ground and leave only my heel in contact with the ground. I do this without eve...

Wow, cool link.
Who are these folks? Primarily the guy who they have the individual still photos of? He's got a very good form.

Hi Nancy, Well, thanks for clearing that up for me. I was sort of wondering what was up with that site. I figured it was something like that, but didn't know for sure. What a great idea. It's not likely you'll get too many "lurkers" on there causing problems, and it gives you the opportuni...

Glad to hear it's the same style!
I started thinking about that, right after I posted my first reply. That's why I came back.
As long as it's the same style, and you're not abandoning your first teacher to go the other one, I can't think of any inpoliteness you'd be perpetrating.
Enjoy.
