Re: Many different styles of yang tai chi

I made this a while back to talk about the variations of Yang Taijiquan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CJ1eKxx_04 Thank you for the compilation Matt. Very good and informative. It's nice to see all the variations strung together. If you have the time, could you elaborate a little on what you see ...

Re: New Chen Yanlin translation from Paul Brennan

Thank you Louis. That certainly clarifies it for me. I was puzzled by what 'energy of habits' might be.

Re: New Chen Yanlin translation from Paul Brennan

It has been a long while since I have logged in. Glad that I did. I'm curious as to how others might translate this? I haven't come across this one before. 非運後天之氣,運氣則流弊甚大,是有窮盡。 It is not a matter of “wielding the energy of habits… for exercises of wielding energy are big frauds” [CWM], and you would...

Looking for Fu Zhongwen video...

There are a number of video clips on youtube of FZW. They all seem to be from the same original video. They include demos on forms (long and weapons, push hands, fa jing). They look like they predate his video where his grandson takes over the kick section (he is wearing white in this one). He is we...

I suppose that I could also note, regarding the individual exercises I learned that are in this set -- some I learned in a Wu Yang style (which turned out to be Wu's Yang), but I don't know the lineage of that; and the others I learned in workshops with John Ding (lineage to Yang Sau Chung).

Hi Yuri, <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2"> Aidren, I like the way you are thinking here but if you are speaking only about the body and physical laws ("not including qi, dantien rotation, and …") how that can be done simultaneously? The body can only either sink or ...

Hello Audi, Thank you for spending the time with this. <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2"> In contexts such as these, many people do not always make clean distinctions between the etymology of characters and the etymology of words. The etymology of Chinese words is an extremely...

Hi Dan Excellent post! As it was I who used the connotation “downward” with regard to an jin, you may be surprised to find out that I agree with what you’ve posted. <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2"> I feel that the primary way that we use anjin in Taijiquan may tend to be dow...

Hello Louis Thanks so much for this. >> The word An means, among other things “to place the hand (or hands) on,” or “to restrain, to control.”<< I like the “control” definition as well. It makes much sense to me. I also like “pressing a button” as it suggests, to me, an’s use (not suggesting this is...

The meaning of an?

As I don't speak or read Chinese, I have often wanted to ask those who do about the way this word is translated and what the etimology (sp?) is in it's various occurences. While, as an energy "an" is manifested as "down", yet when it is translated in it's postural sense from the ...

While I'm no expert, I have done a couple workshops with John Ding (also a disciple of Ip), who described the difference of Crane, Tiger and Snake the same way as Robert Boyd does at his website. Essentially, high, medium, low. It is interesting though, that Robert Boyd continues with this -- "...
