Polaris, You crack me up! I am with you 100%. I have always thought the the basic art of taiji itself weeds out most of the "undesireables", simply through a lack of patience. You don't have to do it as the teacher I mentioned. His problem was that he didn't want to waste his time on any b...

I have not, only the shelves of books over to my left. I have just begun looking into medical research and what you say is very true. I have been trying to compile that information for a presentation and have been having a difficult time of it. Some of it is "buried" very, very, deep. And ...

Wu, I would have to disagree with you on a couple things. It is true that you can find some one who does not have a direct link with one of the "families", who really "understands" the art. But to have taht link is a "plus" when one begins. Now that may not be enough. T...

Greyphantom, In most schools I have seen or attended, push hands usually begins once you have learned the long form---first time through anyway. I can see if done well, push hands first could be possible, but I tend not to be in favor of it. Polaris, The teacher I was mentioning, was weeding out tho...

As for "weeding out"... One of my teachers required you learn 13 Shaolin kicks which you did each in a long string before you could start the form. While everyone else was doing form, you did standing for about thirty minutes. Once you began instruction you still did standing waiting for t...

I agree completely with Polaris. First a real teacher will be proud of his lineage if it has value. You won't offend him or her by your question. The first class I visited I asked the instructor who he learned from. The answer was "A guy down in New Mexico." Did not have to hear more. Of c...

So much to comment on. First I will add my support to those who say that there is nothing in the individual forms that does have "meaning" martially. First a question. Does Yang Jun still teach in the "commencement form" that when you lower the arms that you first take out the re...

mis_72,

Don't know about the "ruler", but was Kwan Saihung still walking around with a guy hanging off his back, his legs around his neck? He has to be pretty old by now.

Wushuer,

When I did a seminar with YZD and Yang Jun I noted that the first day that my Thighs ached so bad (once I had been off them) I could hardly get up. Each day it was less and less. Six to seven hours of taiji daily takes some geting used to. Glad you had a good time.

Wushuer, Posted by Wushuer "Master Yang Jun took some time to explain what YCF did with his families forms during the seminar, even going so far as to show some of the changes he made and explain the differences." Do you think you could share some more on this subject? I for one would be v...

I don't keep track of him, but that is indeed possible. I expect he would run out of students being so far removed.

Polaris, "My Sifu has said, when asked, that our best "apparatus" for training is our training partner's arms, legs, head and torso. He asks us to consider how much money it would cost to build a training dummy as unpredictable and obnoxious as the average T'ai Chi student..." Po...

I have done a little ball training that my teacher got from William Chen's school. Where you pass the ball with the waist. And I have done some that came down through my Kuang Ping line where two people more or less do a form of moving "push hands" with a ball. The intial object to keep th...
