From what I am told, they don't serve much more than a decorative purpose. For the most part I believe they are a modern formation by analogy with the tassel on a straight sword. Others may have differing perspectives, though, this is just my opinion based on what I have been told by my teachers. If...

Yes, I agree with your reasoning completely. "Longevity with Eternal Spring." At an affair a few years ago, someone asked the head of our Singapore school, Ao Tuck-seng Sikung, why he practised T'ai Chi. Ao Sikung was around age 70 at the time. He stood up and said "Most people my age...

Very interesting! The Wu family's formula for such things is: 1. The more you know, the more you know that you don't know. 2. The more you know, the faster you'll learn. 3. You'll always know more than you think you know. And they qualify number 3 by saying that it is the one you hope to never find ...

Duffy,

Good advice, T'ai Chi is a lifetime's study. Don't completely give up on T'ai Chi just yet, though. In a few years you may want to come back to it in order to repair the physical damage playing guitar will cause!

Because, as the Buddha said to Mara when she told him it would be useless for him to try to teach in this world:

"Perhaps someone will listen."

Greetings Everyone, Yeah, I see that wushunut went to MAP and asked about Yang Jun. Of course he got a good answer, Yang Jun has a good reputation outside of the Yang family, IME. For the record, I'm not angry with wushunut at all, I really meant what I said about being a teacher and was interested ...

Now, now... As teachers, we should try to EDUCATE the poor benighted soul! Most Westerners have never heard this stuff before (although I agree with Jerry that the guy probably just came here to flame T'ai Chi), so we should patiently and repeatedly explain our positions, at least until the abuse st...

I hate to say it, but Wushunut's is the insulting, challenging attitude that we see in the West all the time. That's OK, I've kicked around more than a few challengers in my day, it separates good T'ai Chi teachers from the hacks... Wushunut, even if you don't believe it, people really do have to ea...

"So is there a teacher that does the push-hands for Peng Ji Lu An, etc., and has applications such as Chin Na, Dian Xue, etc., teaches classical weapons, etc., without requiring like 20 years of study so that by the time you're done you're an old man?" No. T'ai Chi takes that long to learn...

Pushing hands is training, not fighting. You are quite right that a qualified teacher probably won't push hands with you right off the bat. At my place, you'd have to learn our form first (6-8 months) before you would be shown the most basic pushing hands drills. Basic pushing is very deliberately c...

While there are indeed few people qualified to teach T'ai Chi martially, those who are so qualified are IME reluctant to "show off" their abilities publicly. Instructors who actually have kung fu have gone through a lot of personal changes to get what they've got, and in that process they ...

Yang Ch'eng-fu biography article.

Dear All, If it is at all possible, I'd like to solicit your help with a project. I have started a bio article on Yang Ch'eng-fu on the Wikipedia at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yang_Ch%27eng-fu I have already created a page for Wu Chien-ch'uan, and realized that it was necessary to have one for YC...

Audi, The 24 "Taijigong" forms are all found somewhere in the hand form, so I wouldn't say that they are necessary to learn the martial art. They are a nice shortcut, however, IME. The sequence of the Wu style hand form is essentially the same as that found in Yang style, the only major st...

In our school we learn the martial accurately first, the "jin," and then we get into how the form balances the meridians. we are told that the hand form is designed to completely balance out the entire system once (if done correctly, of course). Kind of like "de-gaussing" the bod...
