WB, This is going to sound strange, but my thoughts on the subject of thoughts are that you'd use your Yi (intention) to put the correct (or as my teachers would say, healthy) amount of attention on your conscious "word-thoughts." In other words, to take them for what they are worth. There...

Greetings All, I believe distinctions can be made between attention, intention and the conscious thought processes. That is something that a long T'ai Chi form trains us for, is to notice how much emphasis we habitually put in each place (assuming we want to know! LOL). That is where I was pointing ...

Here is a link to an old story of the time of Yang Lu-ch'an and Wu Ch'uan-yu:

I'm not sure how factual it is, but it should at least be entertaining!

Cheers,

Ah yes, I too have felt a centre=Dantian correlation. I am told that "thinking" Qi to Dantian doesn't work well, that it is dropped there briefly by Yi (not the same as verbal thought) and then subsequently "felt" as it moves around. One then "sends" Qi with Yi to where...

Greetings, There is another tradition which mentions the high esteem in which Sun Lu-t'ang's abilities were held by Yang Shao-hou, Yang Ch'eng-fu and Wu Chien-ch'uan. I'm not sure if Sun had much of a direct influence on YCF's teaching, but I am told that Wu Chien-ch'uan incorporated footwork, linea...

For my 2 cents worth, I would say that they Yi is the agent which sends the Qi to Dantian and the Shen to the top of the head. The Yi has to be able to go anywhere and do anything that your creativity can practically imagine based on your abilities, not rigidly focussed on one area. I have been taug...

I have some more food for thought. In the tradition that I train in, it is said that Yang Ch'eng-fu and Wu Chien-ch'uan (Wu Jianquan) started smoothing out their forms around 1914 or so because of the students they were teaching at the Beijing Physical Culture Institute. Previous to 1914, the studen...

WB, Yes, it does seem that way to someone who may punch a person trained in this technique, but it isn't hard style "iron shirt" as such. My teachers call it "shielding" and stress that the technique uses a completely different, soft style, focus (based on internal circular neutr...

Greetings All, I'm sorry DavidJ, my comments about CSF were actually for rvc_ve. BTW, I am speaking of Wu Chien-ch'uan style, not Wu/Hao. They are different. There is a fuller version of the "restrictive clothing" story on Peter Lim's "History of T'ai Chi Ch'uan" website. The res...

Jeff and Wushuer, Greetings. The questions: "Do the Wu's talk about practicing "the surface of a sphere" vs. practicing "the center of a sphere"? I have heard it articulated this way by Yang experts. I am wondering if this is what your school may refer to as "large circ...

Greetings DavidJ & All, I just want to add a comment to the statement: "Yang Lu Chan also developed the basis for Wu style so that the nobles that he taught could defend themselves indoors in fairly restrictive clothing." This is a misconception, according to the Wu family themselves. ...

Greetings All, Ch'i kung (please forgive the Wade-Giles) is an important part of my training and teaching. For some seniors' classes, it is all they can do! The ch'i kung we do is that handed down from my teachers' family. My Sifu has called it "T'ai Chi Kung" or "Nei Kung" on oc...

Greetings All, "Observe the cat before he leaps onto the gatepost. First he looks up at his destination and places himself there...then he jumps. It is as though the cat is already on the gatepost before he leaps...his body simply joins him there." That is as good a description of "I&...
