Hengyu, This is actually quite normal. I don't know anyone who doesn't start out pushing and pulling, yanking and tugging on each other when they start Tui Shou. I'd bet there's not a person on the planet who didn't start out this way. It takes time for people to realise, and a good teacher to help ...

Demonstration DVD

I got to see this last night for the first time, one of my practice group brought it to the house and we watched it together rather than do form work, like we should have done. Hey, it's COLD here in Kentucky and we work in my basement. Which is "heated", but not "hot" by any str...

Audi, Leading and following are the same thing... I'd never thought of it like that before, but it makes sense. Hmmm......? Something to think on. I need to play with that for a while and see if I can clear up the concept. As for intent... I had always considered having intent as being a full time t...

TCC, Um... No. Why would I? If I insult his current TCC style, he's not going to be very likely to come to those who do know TCC to train it. Besides, I'm no more an expert on TCC than the guy who invented his own system. It's not up to me to pass judgement on the style he trains. I let my push hand...

Louis,
I only have the Giles version at this point. I've been "meaning" to get a newer version, but you know how that goes.
I guess I should, as Giles translation is a tad lacking compared to others.

Matt, The sad part is, this man is correct. Arrogant? I really don't get that impression. I think he is speaking plainly and somewhat sadly on the state of an art he pretty obviously admires. I don't get the impression that he's slamming TCC so much as he's slamming people who claim to practice it b...

Kal, There are many, many applicable passages in Art of War on concealing intent. There is the chapter on using spies, it has a lot to say not only about concealing intent, but about sending baited, or misleading, messages to the enemy in order to force him to move in response to a false threat, aft...

Kal,

That Yang Jun has set you to reading Art of War is no surprise to me. It is the penultimate classic book for learning strategy.

Maybe not exactly to the point, but while reading this thread and think of concealing intent, for some reason I started to think of the passage by Sun Tzu, in Art of War, Use of Energy, called Decision Releases Force (as translated by Lionel Giles). Of course, Sun Tzu wrote Art of War for combat bet...

Bamboo, How on earth do you "fake" putting out a flame? It either goes out, or it doesn't. The technique uses only TCC skills. I wouldn't have the first clue how to "fake" those. But that's not important, really. What IS important is your obvious belief in this phenomenon. Nothin...

Ander, Um. No. But that's not what the legend says. "It is said that long ago Yang Luchan and his son were able to attract the flame of a candle almost a foot away. At the move of a hand, the candle flame would gradually go out. This was one of the techniques of the empty force, but its traditi...

I have to agree completely with Chee Fatt on this one. I had direct, and long term, training with someone who was clearly on a TCC families "lineage" chart. I thought I would surely get top quality training from them, after all they were on a "list", had their name right there in...

TCCstudent, Well... Yes and no. Lineage discussions are rather boring for the most part. That's very true. And what's important IS the here and now. Also very true. However, what Yang Lu Chan did a hundred years ago can give us insight into the practice and study of TCC today. As long as we look at ...

Candle flames? Well... I'm not sure what is meant by "attract a candle flame". Though the story does go on to say that they could put out the flame from a foot away by making a gesture at it. I only ask, because putting out candles by punching at them, or even flicking a finger at them, is...
