I actually picked that up from Wu Tai Sin. He used to say that to me all the time, but not in that context.
While he was trying to teach us saber form he would tell us that we were all fighting him to try and retain our bad habits but he was going to fight with us until we lost that battle.
I kind of changed it when I needed to come up with something on the fly.
Come to think of it, Bill Wojasinski says much the same thing to me, all the time. Guess I'm still fighting.
The saying you're trying to come up with is one the Wu family uses:
The more you know, the more you'll know that you don't know.
The more you know, the faster you will learn.
You know more than you think you know, but hope that you never have to prove it.
