Need some help. Can you please express Fa Jin in the English language?
Is it cosmic energy?
Thank you so much. Need this to communicate with my fellow tai chi si hings.

Re: Fa Jin in English
Greetings Isaac,
I think "cosmic energy" sounds a little hyperbolic. Fajin really just means to release energy, or to issue strength. You may want to have a look through this old discussion thread: http://www.yangfamilytaichi.com/phpBB3/ ... ?f=7&t=716
Take care,
Louis

First of all, for one to understand what is Fa Jin (發勁), it is necessary to understand what jin (勁) is.Isaac888 wrote:Need some help. Can you please express Fa Jin in the English language?

An ordinary person has a normal strength called li (力). However, a Tai Ji practitioner has jin (勁) . Thus Jin was acquired from the extensive practice of Tai Ji. The Jin is much greater than the normal strength. Literally speaking, Jin can be 10 to 1000 times greater than li (力). Sometimes, Jin was described as an explosive force. Jin can be let out from the body muscles at anytime as one desires.
Fa (發) is to let out; issue
Jin (勁) is a tremendous body force which was acquired from the extensive practice of Tai Ji.
Fa Jin (發勁) is to issue the tremendous force from any part of the body.
Jin cannot be learned from an instructor nor from any style. It has to be acquired by the practitioner oneself from a long period of Tai Ji practice. The amount of Jin depends on the length of years and how extensive one does the practice daily. In other words, the more practice the more Jin can be developed in the muscles.
Let's put it in simple English. If you have felt that your body strength has been increased tremendously, then you have developed Jin in your muscles from the extensive Tai Ji practice.
Note:
Jin can be explained to the body cell level. In order to understand more about Jin, one needs to study physiology and find out how the body energy was generated by muscle contraction. In addition, Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) is something which need to be looked into also.
A deep discussion requires explicit details for a good comprehension of a complex subject.
Re: Fa Jin in English
Jin can be even discussed to the cellular level. First of all, one need to ask where does the body energy come from? Well, form modern science, it was known that the energy was generated by the mitochondria in the body cells. The energy can be described as li(力, body strength). The amount of li in strength depends how many mitochondria are there in the body cells. In other words, the more mitochondria the more li can be generated. As the practice of Tai Ji diligently, in conjunction with the Ultimate Method of Breathing(UMB) on a daily basis, it has a biological effect inside the body cell. The effect is that more mitochondria will be reproduced by a biochemical process called the cellular respiration. As a result, the more mitochondria in the cells, a tremendous amount of li can be produced. Finally, the tremendous amount of li can be issued by muscle contraction which is known as Jin(勁). The Jin is only existed in a diligent practitioner of Tai Ji.
