Choosing

Hi,
I will begin the saber form soon and I have to buy one and I want to buy a sword too.
I would like to know which differences does the blade lenght brings. Also, the differences, at the practical level, between the grooved and non-grooved sword.
I may buy it used. What should I look for when I inspect one to detect defects or find a jem.
