Kal, Chee, Thankyou very much for your posts, they help a lot. Now, in an attempt to tie this back into the rest of the thread...Chee, we do an exercise for centering and rooting which involves the receiver assuming a full forward weighted bow stance and the pusher gradually pushing harder and harde...

Hi Bob, Yes, I know that dynamic push hands is practised and is something we will come on to in the fullness of time, But I have not done it or seen it done yet...I am still very inexperienced and have not done any moving push hands at all, just cross hands and open hand with no footwork. We also do...

I am no expert but it seems to me that the guy who describes Cheng Man Ching as a 'little scribe' and uses some of Robert Smith's words from, I believe, Chinese Boxing: Masters and Methods, to back his thrust, conveniently leaves out Smith's comments on Cheng, where he describes his martial prowess ...

Hi Kal, Thanks for elaborating on that final paragraph; what you've put above verbalises the sort of thing I had floating around in my head after reading your initial post. For what it's worth I think you're right - the state that I had thought desirable and something to aspire to was actually the o...

Kal, you asked: "Does anyone have any experience with altered time states—in general, and specifically in a tai chi context?" Just one, in my very first martial arts tournament. It was some years ago and I was studying an external Korean style and enetered a local semi contact tournament. ...

That sounds very interesting YCFO4 - like Laton I am still very much a beginner, but we do do something that sounds like the basis for what you talk about - in standing Chi Gung practise the teacher will gradually apply pressure firmer and firmer, so the student has to root and, depending on whether...

Not yet, I have done some single and double static push hands, next up is, I believe, Da Lu.

Hi Laton13 - have you had the chance to see Mr Ding in action yet?

YCF04, that sounds familiar...do you also have great emphasis placed on opening and closing? Having had the chance to attend a seminar with Master Ding, Ip Tai Tak's first disciple, I must say I was overwhelmed. Some of the things he can do I find very hard to get my head around. It's very inspiring...

Well, if you do get through be sure and report back - I'd be intrigued to hear your thoughts and observations. I'd be fascinated to hear how they differ and what your take on the variations is.

YCF04 - do you do a lot of standing practice also?

My teacher also teaches the same lineage from Yang Sau Chang, but through his first disciple Ip Tai Tak..from what I have seen of YZD's form (which is not a lot and I am not very experienced, so...)there are quite a few differences externally. Also, there is a strong emphasis on standing Chi Gung pr...

Wu - I've really enjoyed reading, and learnt a lot from, your posts - I look forward to reading more (hopefully) under your new guise. While I'm here... I don't know why, but I was fascinated with martial arts from an early age. I did some Aikido pre-teens and then after moving house I joined the lo...
